We know that purchasing a summer house is not a cheap investment for most people. That is why we set up a display site in Devon, where you can see a wide variety of our summer houses to find the right one.
We are currently open from Monday to Friday as standard, but you can book weekend appointments in advance. Call us in advance if you want to see a specific model. With well over 300 different summer houses on offer, we sadly cannot showcase them all (as much as we would love to!)
On-site, there is also a Virtual Reality program you can use to try the cabin style and test your interior design skills. This tool will let you create your dream summer house and allow you to bring your vision to life. It is also an excellent tool to ensure you don’t purchase the wrong summer house for your needs.

Do you need planning permission for a summer house? What about building regulations?
One typical query customers have is whether or not they need planning permission to build a summer house in their garden. Fortunately, most smaller garden buildings are allowed under ‘Permitted Development’ rights.
How big can a summer house be without planning permission?
In most cases, you do not need planning permission for your summer house if it meets these requirements:
- It will not be used for permanent residential use
- Your summer house is a single-storey building
- The maximum height of a building with a double pitched roof is 4 metres, or 2.5 metres if it is within 2 metres of the curtilage boundary. For all other buildings, the maximum height is 3 metres. Height is measured from the ground to the highest point of the building.
- The eaves (where the roof meets the outside wall) must not be higher than 2.5 metres.
- Any decking must be no higher than 0.3 metres.
- It does not take up more than 50% of your garden
- You build it behind your house, not in the garden in front or on the side

What about building regulations?
The general rule is that building regulations will not apply if the floor area of the building is less than 15 square metres and there is no sleeping accommodation.
For slightly larger buildings – between 15 square metres and 30 square metres – you won’t need to apply for building regulations approval if the building has no sleeping accommodation and is located at least one metre from boundaries or is built substantially of non-combustible materials.
What material is used in building a summer house?
Traditional materials are at the forefront of our design plans when we build our summer houses. Wood is one of our essential building materials and has been at the heart of outdoor buildings for many years.
For starters, wood is one of the most accessible materials, but it is also one of the most natural materials you can choose to build a summer house with.
Wood is also the perfect material for summer houses as it is excellent and balances humidity and temperature. So long as it is well maintained, a wooden summer house will last for many years.
From an aesthetic perspective, wood also creates the perfect atmosphere. You need a summer house that allows you to feel like you are getting in touch with nature and taking you away from the busy lifestyle of concrete buildings and metal structures.
Therefore, wood is perfect for summer houses, garden buildings, and other outdoor structures.

What base is best for a summer house? Do I need a base?
Yes, you need a base for a summer house to ensure stability and longevity. A solid and level base, such as a concrete slab, is generally best. Paving slabs or a wooden frame filled with gravel can also suffice for smaller models.
How to use a summer house around the year: Tips for keeping warm and cold according to season
For Winter: Insulate the walls, floor, and roof. Use portable heaters and ensure that windows and doors can tightly shut to keep heat in.
For Summer: Install reflective window films and blinds to keep it cool. Ensure good airflow with vents or opening windows to prevent overheating.

Absolutely! Almost all of our prefabricated summer houses can be assembled with ease. Still, we advise that you only do so if you have a reasonable level of prior experience and ability.
For some people, we know that building the summer house is as much fun as enjoying the finished product, which is why we offer cabin kits that includes everything to DIY a summer house shed.
Our cabin kits include instructions for you to follow alongside all the materials you need, such as decking boards, screws, windows, and doors.
