Tools and materials you’ll need
To install your foundation kit, gather the following:
- Foundation kit from Summerhouse24 (specific to your shed model)
- Spade or shovel
- Rake
- Spirit level
- Gravel or crushed stone
- Weed membrane
- Rubber mallet
- Tape measure
- Tamper or plate compactor
Step-by-step installation guide
Step 1: Plan and review the foundation base layout
- After placing your order, Summerhouse24 provides a foundation base plan tailored to your shed model. This plan marks the exact locations of the support points.
- Review the foundation layout and ensure the area chosen for the installation matches the plan dimensions.
- Clear and Prepare the Ground: Start by selecting an ideal spot in your garden. Ensure the area is relatively flat, has good drainage, and is clear of vegetation. A stable and even surface is essential for a durable shed base. Clear away any grass, plants, and debris using a spade. Level the area with a rake, and lay a weed membrane over the entire space to prevent weeds from growing under the shed.
Step 2: Assemble the foundation base frame
- Lay out the timber components of the base frame on the ground.
- Following the provided instructions, assemble the base frame by connecting the timber pieces securely.
- Use screws and a drill to fasten the joints. Ensure all corners are tightly connected.
Step 3: Align and measure the diagonals
- Check that the base frame is perfectly square by measuring the diagonals. Both diagonals should be equal in length.
- Adjust the frame if necessary to achieve perfect alignment, as this is crucial for a stable shed base.
Step 4: Attach support legs
- Screw a nut onto each threaded bar of the support legs, positioning it approximately at the halfway point for adjustment flexibility later.
- Attach the adjustable support legs to the base frame at the specified locations.
Step 5: Position and mark the frame
- Ensure the frame is level and correctly positioned. Use a marker or stakes to mark the ground where each support leg will be installed.
- Flip the completed base frame over and position it in the desired location for your shed.
- For added stability, anchor the frame to the ground using the stakes provided in the kit. This step is beneficial if your area experiences strong winds.
Step 6: Drill holes for threaded bars
- The holes should be deep enough to anchor the threaded bars of the support legs securely.
- Temporarily remove the base frame and drill holes into the ground at the marked locations.
Step 7: Install the base frame and support plates
- Lift the foundation base frame into place, aligning the support legs with the drilled holes.
- Insert the threaded bars into the ground and secure them by tightening the nuts.
- Install the metal support plates at the base of each leg to provide additional stability.
Step 8: Final adjustments
- Double-check that the base frame is level in all directions using a spirit level. Tap the frame with a rubber mallet as needed to level it.
- Adjust the height of the support legs as needed by turning the nuts on the threaded bars.
- Once everything is aligned and level, tighten all screws and nuts to secure the base frame.
Tips for a smooth installation
- Check the weather: Avoid working in rainy conditions, as it’s harder to level the ground.
- Check the ground: Ensure the area is free from debris, vegetation, and uneven surfaces before starting.
- Use proper tools: A spirit level, drill, and marker are essential for accurate assembly.
- Follow the instructions: Summerhouse24 provides detailed guides with the kit. Refer to them throughout the process.
- Work in teams: Some steps, such as flipping and positioning the base frame, may require two people.
Benefits of a foundation kit
- Level surface: Ensures doors and windows operate smoothly.
- Improved drainage: Gravel prevents water from pooling around the base.
- Stability: Provides a secure foundation, even in windy conditions.
Installing a foundation kit is a practical, efficient solution for setting up a shed or any garden room. With these simple steps and expert guidance from Summerhouse24, you can ensure your shed has a strong, stable base without the hassle of concrete.
